( Story Behind the Name )

This hall is dedicated to Raja Ravi Varma (1848–1906) one of India’s greatest painters, often hailed as the father of modern Indian art.

Renowned for blending European realism with Indian mythological and classical themes, his works brought divine and historical figures to life with emotion and grace.

Born in the princely state of Travancore, Raja Ravi Varma’s association with the Gaekwads of Baroda was especially significant. Invited to Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III’s court in 1881, he painted the Maharaja’s investiture portrait and several other royal family artworks leaving behind a timeless legacy of artistic brilliance.
